Director for Finance & Accounting

Description:This position exists to provide leadership and direction to all accounting and grants finance functions, so that they operate in an efficient and reliable manner, with the appropriate controls in place.  The position will drive the use of technology within the accounting and grants finance units, in order to streamline operations and ensure that the units are poised to proactively support the finance needs of a dynamic and growing organization.  This position will lead a close integrated partnership between finance staff and all other LIRS staff, so that decisions are made with full knowledge of financial implications.  This position will also provide compliance oversight related to awards received by LIRS.
Duties: 

1. Manage grants finance and accounting functions. This includes 1) designing the general ledger system to be as simple as possible, while still meeting the reporting and analytical needs of the agency 2) ensuring proper flow and posting of financial data to the general ledger 3) timely month end closing and reconciliations 4) spearhead financial external audits of financial information 5) oversee lifecycle of financial portion of all awards, from proposal to implementation and closure 6) oversight of reimbursement process to affiliates and other subgrantees, including financial monitoring 7) Cash is controlled and available when needed

2. Streamline and document all accounting / finance policies and procedures, utilizing best practices with technology when practical.  Ensure reporting is effective to meet the needs of the users.

3. Financial analysis, which includes a broad range of activities that include supporting the budget and business plan process, testing allocations, indirect rate, and other approaches to ensure that the approach used is the most beneficial for LIRS overall, and determining the optimal  accounting solutions that meets LIRS needs and reflects LIRS values.

4. Communication and integration of finance / budget and business plans into every unit of LIRS.  This includes re-engineering the annual budget to provide a broader view of program services, in a way more visionary and helpfully challenging to staff, ensuring that all managing staff have complete and clear financial information on which to make decisions, and goals of the business plan are quantified and legitimately achievable.

5. Actively engage as a director on Strategy Council, by participating in the agency wide leadership that drives LIRS from the high level strategic goals to successful implementation. 

6. Coaching and development of accounting/finance staff.

7. Other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications: 
  1. Deep commitment to LIRS's core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
  2. Masters degree in accounting, finance, or business administration and/or CPA required.
  3. Ten (10) to fifteen (15) years of management experience in accounting/finance field.
  4. Proven track record successfully negotiating U.S. Government awards.
  5. Proven communication skills utilizing a variety of tools like spreadsheets, graphs, written narrative, and oral methods that present complex financial information in a concise, easy to understand, format.  Samples required.
  6. Proven ability to see big picture, anticipate and resolve issues, and organize details.
  7. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office software required. 
  8. Experience with and commitment to working with diverse ethnic groups is preferred.
  9. Appreciation and respect for Lutheran beliefs and values, church member motivations and sensitivities.
  10. Recent experience with a not for profit organization, A-133 audits and IRS Form 990 is preferred.
  11. Recent experience and/or exposure to various accounting systems and subsidiary systems is preferred; knowledge of recent improvements and best practices in using accounting/finance-related software required.
  12. Proven attention to detail as realized in numeric accuracy, precise labels, and aesthetically pleasing presentations of the data is required.
  13. Demonstrated problem solving skills and good judgment is required.
  14. Demonstrated ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative information is required.
  15. Ability to travel within the United States approximately 5% of the time, preferred.
