Description:The Senior Writer supports the LIRS mission and brand through the writing of compelling stories, news releases, articles, marketing collateral, educational materials, web content, and other communications for a variety of audiences. All writing must be in alignment with LIRS positions, advocacy priorities, style guidelines, and marketing strategies.  Successful fulfillment of the role entails working closely with staff and partners to develop stories, maximize time-sensitive media opportunities, and prepare effective resources for production. This is a part-time (less than 20 hours per week) position and may be based anywhere in the USA.
Duties:1. Writing and editing

• Collect and develop stories for multiple uses.

• Write copy for print and electronic materials such as news releases, statements, newsletters, brochures, manuals, advertisements, event and conference materials, promotional items, advocacy alerts and social media.

• Serve as senior copyeditor for LIRS.

2. Media Relations

• Distribute news releases and maintain relationship with wire service(s).

• Network with media contacts to maximize opportunities.

3. Engage in unit and departmental meetings and activities.

4. Engage in organization-wide activities and initiatives including all-staff meetings, working groups or task forces and implementation of strategic initiatives.

5. Engage in ongoing professional development.

6. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:
  1. Deep commitment to LIRS's core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
  2. Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, education or related field
  3. Significant experience writing for faith-based and / or non-profit organizations
  4. Proven ability to write with clarity, persuasiveness and emotional impact for a range of audiences
  5. Demonstrated proficiency in copywriting, copyediting and proofreading
  6. Excellent research and interviewing skills
  7. Experience developing stories collaboratively and independently
  8. Experience writing for the web, traditional media and new media
  9. Experience networking with media
  10. Adaptability to shifting priorities and time-sensitive assignments
  11. Experience following and maintaining editorial style guidelines and facility with the Chicago Manual of Style or similar style guide
  12. Experience with and commitment to working in a very diverse workforce
  13. Appreciation and respect for Lutheran beliefs and values, church member motivations and sensitivities
  14. Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  15. Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
  16. Experience with standard professional office procedures, systems and management
  17. Ability to work well independently and to collaborate as member of a team
  18. Outstanding problem-solving, negotiation and customer service skills
  19. High degree of professionalism, tact and diplomacy
  20. Ability to travel up to 15% of the time
