| Description: | Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is a national faith-based organization with a 75-year history, a budget of approximately $58 million per year, and over 100 headquarters staff. For several decades the organization has received the vast majority of its funding from the federal government and has developed a widely-recognized expertise in implementing federal programs on behalf of refugees and migrants living within the borders of the United States. Working with and through partners across the country, LIRS resettles refugees, reunites children with their families or provides loving homes for them, conducts policy advocacy, and pursues humanitarian alternatives to the immigration detention system. The Deputy Director for Communications will assist in ensuring strategic and effective communications by helping to oversee the development and implementation of the LIRS communications strategy and shaping organizational communications priorities to improve internal communications efforts.. Reporting to the Director for Communications, s/he will share management responsibility for communications staff, collaborating with the Director to oversee the overall function and management of the department. S/he will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing an internal communications strategy that is aligned with business and operational strategies to inform, motivate and connect LIRS employees and the partner network. In addition, the Deputy Director will ensure accuracy of communications protocols and provide quality control, serving as a managing editor for communications-related projects and materials. |
| Duties: | • Under the leadership of the Director for Communications, assist with developing and monitoring communications strategy that supports LIRS' priorities, mission, goals, and outcomes. • Lead the development, implementation and management of all internal communications efforts. • Identify opportunities to support organizational initiatives through the development and implementation of innovative internal communications tactics that inform and strengthen the employee community across departments, units, and functions as well as fulfilling the network backbone role that LIRS plays in its larger engagement of network partners. • Build and foster collaborative relationships with staff at all levels of the organization, including network partners. • Review, update, and maintain communications and branding protocols. • Assist staff with establishing production and project timetables; serve as managing editor for communications materials, ensuring alignment with messaging priorities, brand quality and consistency. Assists in overseeing integration between all communications platforms. • Supervise and mentor department staff to ensure effective integration of communications efforts as well as effective performance management. • Support the Director in developing and overseeing annual budget. • Engagement in agency-wide activities and initiatives including all-staff meetings, working groups or task forces and implementation of strategic initiatives. • Other duties as assigned. |
| Qualifications: | • Undergraduate degree in Communications, Business or related field. Graduate degree preferred. • At least 7 years of communications experience, preferably focused on a non-profit environment, with a demonstrated track record of successfully managing people, processes, priorities and projects in a complex environment. • Superior writing and editing experience; meticulous attention to detail. • Demonstrated experience with both strategic development and tactical implementation. • Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating effective internal communications strategies preferably in a faith-based, social justice, or cause-based context. • Flexible and adaptable thinker; open-minded problem-solver with an ability to produce results despite changing or ambiguous circumstances; adaptive and willing to take on a variety of new assignments. • Ability to make decisions that align with strategy, vision, and mission. • Ability to efficiently manage and share information and knowledge. • Ability to develop and implement strategies for engaging with multiple internal audiences through a variety of communications platforms. • Experience managing teams; able to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner. • Experience with technology and its application to internal communications is essential; proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, Access and other Microsoft Suite software. • Commitment to LIRS's core mission and values and an ability to model those values in relationship with colleagues and partners; commitment to empowering refugees and migrants.Application Instructions: To be considered, please submit resume and cover letter.
